Drastic Waste Reduction During Recent Carbon Tradeex America Event In Washington, DC

Chicago / London / Cologne – April 27, 2009

“Act as you preach” – when recently conducting an industry show dealing with the future of the U.S. Carbon Market, the organizer encouraged delegates and exhibitors to join in the effort to reduce waste during the event and set an example for the exhibition industry.

In the planning stages, the organizer Koelnmesse, screened various venues for their waste reduction policies and decided on the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The location made sense for a variety of reasons: Attendees could take the subway right to the doorsteps of the Convention Center, the center provides bicycle racks and bus service lines to downtown hotels were available.

The Convention Center also runs a Water Conservation program as rain water is collected via the roof systems and stored into underground tanks, sinks and water fountains provide filtered water. All exterior walls of the Center are comprised of clear low-emissions glass that maximizes natural light, and controls temperature fluctuations. Bathrooms use 100% SCA post consumer paper disposables and Green Seal certified “Cojo” foam hand soap.

During Carbon TradeEx America, the Convention Center provided color coded, waste separation containers. All event signs were made out of 100% recyclable materials, attendees were encouraged to fill water in reusable water bottles, saving 3,000 plastic water bottles from waste stream. In addition, the conference program and speaker bios were tailored to be viewed on wireless mobile devices saving more than 200,000 pieces of paper. Leading up to the event the 46 exhibitors received an electronic version of the exhibitor manual saving an additional 10,000 pieces of paper. The 64 tons of Greenhouse Gas Emission (GHG) generated during the course of the event was offset by First Climate a full-service carbon management consulting company that issues carbon credits. http://www.firstclimate.com
